Exciting News

Written By: Cheryl Dunn, Outreach Director

Child Start was selected as one of seven Kansas District Offices as part of a major redesign of the 15 CCR&R agencies that make up the statewide network of the Kansas Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (KACCRRA). Additionally, Child Start was selected as one of three Referral Call Centers for Kansas. The restructuring is to better serve both child care professionals and parents in the state of Kansas. The redesign model came from considerations made by the KACCRRA board of directors for a better service delivery model. In February, Child Start submitted a proposal for delivering services and presented the plan to a KACCRRA review panel in March. Shortly after, Child Start was notified by Leadell Ediger, Executive Director of KACCRRA, that the proposal was accepted for both the District Office and the Call Center and that we would begin serving our new counties starting July 1st.

The Child Start Referral Call Center will respond to parent child care referral calls and serve the 316 and 620 area codes. The other two new Call Center s are located in Topeka and Kansas City. As part of the redesign, the entire state of Kansas will share one toll free number for all parent referral calls. The state-wide number for parents to call for referrals is 1-877-678-2548. Beginning July 1, parents will call and be transferred to the appropriate call center for their location. The local number for parents in the Wichita area to call for referrals remains 316-682-3962.

The Child Start CCR&R District Office will deliver training, coaching and support, resource library, referral advertising, as well as other child care professional services to Butler, Cowley, Harper, Harvey, Kingman, Marion, McPherson, Reno, Rice, Sedgwick, and Sumner Counties. Providers wishing to update their referrals will still call Child Start at 316-682-3962 or 1-800-684-3962.

In order to facilitate the expanded areas, Child Start will be hiring additional staff, referral will be open longer, and Resource Libraries will have more items and locations available. Another exciting event that begins July 1st is on demand online child care referrals. Look for more information in the near future.

Please contact Cheryl Dunn, Child Start Outreach Director, if you have questions.

Keeping Babies Safe in the Sun

Written By: Mary Williams, Infant/Toddler Specialist

As summer approaches we look forward to having more fun in the sun. Keep these safety tips in mind for our littlest ones as they enjoy playtime outdoors.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that when using sunscreen for infants under 6 months of age to only apply to small areas of the body such as the face and the back of the hands.

  • The sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 30.
  • Use light clothing to cover the other areas of the body and a hat with a wide brim.
  • Keep the infant on a blanket in the shade when outside during the peak hours of the sun (10am to 4pm).
  • Keep infants hydrated with formula or breast milk. A little extra water is okay but too much can cause the infant to suffer from water intoxication which can lead to seizures.

Child Start Membership

The 2006-2007 Professional Development Memberships will expire July 31st, 2007. Unused training credits will not carry over to the next program year. Current members can expect to receive the new membership form in June. In July, those not holding a 2006-2007 membership can find a printable membership form available on our website or fill one out from the next Crib Notes. Online membership registration and payment for the 2007-2008 membership year will be available August 1st. Visit www.childstart.org/join.html for more information.

Providers wishing to use the Caring 4 Kids Substitute service after July 31st will need to purchase a 2007-2008 Professional Development Membership and pay the Caring 4 Kids Annual Fee ($30).

As expected, both professional development trainings and memberships will be increasing price this year. This is a result of inflation/cost of living, mileage costs, and other factors that contribute to providing quality trainings. This minimal increase will be $1 per credit hour for non members. Membership holders will also see an increase but still save money by purchasing blocks of training credits. In fact, this year, the more hours you purchase the bigger discount you will receive.

The Importance of Play

The Importance of Play
Cindy Hively, Infant/Toddler Specialist

Play comes naturally to children. It has great value to them and is critical to their development.  Through play, they learn how to function in the world.  Play has value because it:

  • Gives children a sense of accomplishment
  • Allows them to find out what works and what doesn’t
  • Allows children to explore
  • Duplicates real life situations
  • Helps children work out all kinds of feelings
  • Develops concentration and coordination
  • Teaches all sorts of mental and motor skills
  • Teaches them how to solve problems
  • Teaches creativity
  • Teaches children how to get along with one another
  • Develops their senses
  • Can prevent discipline problems.
  • Play keeps children busy and less likely to get in trouble
  • Allows them to burn off energy
  • Strengthens family bonds when parents and children play together
